Flashcards
I'm thinking about the flashcard system I'm using for my Chinese vocabulary. It's a good thing, although I'm still not using them the way I should. Yesterday I have put all my cards on one pile and went through all of them writing down the Chinese characters and speaking the words out quietly. I had a correctness rate of about 94.4% which I consider quite good. I just counted my flashcards... So far we have learned 233 vocabs. And with chapter 15 we can add 18 more to that, now.
They don't fit into my little "Vokabelböxchen" anymore, so I will have to start a "home pile" with the vocabs I know for sure. I'm thinking of making a 3+1 pile system:

Pile #1: New vocabs, unknown words. Herein goes every word I didn't get right or I didn't know at all. Herein also goes the newest vocabulary. Repeat as long as I get them right.
Pile #2: Known vocabs. Repeat every other day. That should suffice.
Pile #3: Correctly known vocabs from Pile #2 go in here. Repeat once a week.
Pile #4: At home pile. Vocabs that don't require further learning. Might be tested occassionally, though.

Certain rules have to be put up for myself.
§1: Correct vocabs may move up one pile, but not more. And only if known for certain without much thinking. Both the character and the pronunciation (with the tones) have to be correct.
§2: Wrong vocabs will move down all the way down to Pile #1.
§3: A vocab is known wrong if:
     a) The character is drawn wrong.
     b) The pronunciation (Hànyǔ Pīnyīn) is said wrong.
     c) The tones are incorrect.
     d) Either the pronunciation or the character required too long a think.
§4: A vocab card may not move more than one pile during its own cycle.
§5: New vocabs may not move up in stack on the day of their addition to the stack. This includes wrong vocabs in Pile #1.

Count unit words are not yet being supported by this system. The new rules and the system will be inforced by André Müller starting 二零零五年一月十日 directly after the new vocabulary from lesson 15 has been added to the stack.

That sounds like a really good system. I just started doing flash cards for my charcters a couple weeks ago and I found it really helped. I think I will adopt your system of the various piles as I also have too many now to fit in my box! And it sounds really effective.

I hope it is. I used to have a program called JStackz, or something similar, for Japanese Kanji. I played around with it a bit. It was quite good because it managed the different piles and the new additions to the stack by itself. Would've been good if it existed for Chinese or (even better actually) as 'blanco' cards...

I've always just made mine by hand. I always cut the index cards I use in half, which inevitably leads to paper cuts while practicing. I like the idea of a computer program that arranges all that for you. Of course making them in the first place is part of the learning process.

There are a two sets of Flash flashcards that you can use there; there's no audio, but they are good for vocabulary drills (if you wish to expand it and reïnforce basic words).

Hm, nice. Although they seem to be in traditional Chinese and I cannot elect the words themselves.

You all should share your flashcards at flashcard exchange. There are already quite a few Chinese flashcards:

Create a free account and type in your flashcards. You can then link directly to the flashcards you create (to a list of flashcards you have created) and people could study your flashcards. You can also put the flashcards you create in the chinese language directory.

Hm, okay. That'd require typing in more than 250 flashcards... I'll think about it.
